February 6
Was I a happy camper when, at the top of the Burn lift, I was blown around by gale-force winds and pelted by flying sleet flakes? My discomfort soon ended when our group skied to Mick’s Gulley through the woods. The storm was gone, but we faced flat light on an empty slope. Later, the sun came out, but by then, Vicki and I were in our room; she was on the computer, and I was lost in sleep.
Franck, who has a long history of mountain climbing and participating in high-level adventures, loves extreme weather, and his stories could make an exciting book. Do you know anyone whose tent and sleeping bags caught fire thirteen miles from civilization near Maine’s Mt. Katahdin in the winter? Was the temperature 7 degrees? Yes. Did he and his friends walk thirteen miles back to their car in the dark with heavy packs? Yes!
Ben and Michael, who were on Janet and Franck’s trip to the Dolomites, have joined our group. Ben, a retired Ophthalmologist, took the day off to take pictures. His photos are extraordinary. Mike was Ben’s roommate in medical school, and he is a retired family practice physician. He is the best skier in our group.
Last night’s dinner at Slice was fun, with good food and cheer. Some of our group may go to The Aspen Highlands area today, but Vicki and I will ski at Snowmass.
I LOVE... LOVE...LOVE reading your Stories from the Road. Vicarious adventures! :) :) :)
Thanks Carren. I appreciate your feedback.
